I am writing a book about Captain Lassche, a Dutch Captain who served on board one of the vessels who transported Jews from Palestine to Mauritius in 1940. Because of this I mentioned the Struma affair as well. I always thought that it was a Russian submarine who torpedoed the Struma, but now I read it could be a British sub? I don’t know what to publish now – Russian or British. Can you help me with this?

Jan Berghuis

Reply:
It was possibly a submarine sent by the Soviet authorities acting on British request, as wartime Allies. The suggestion was that the people on the Struma would have included a large number of Nazi spies.
