Jerusalem Facts & Figures

The following spotlight is a précis of the most recent population statistics relating to Jerusalem, prepared by the Jerusalem institute of Israel studies. It makes interesting reading.

Area
Jerusalem is the largest city in Israel. It’s municipal area is reported to be 126 square kilometres, as compared to Tel Aviv at 52 square kilometres and Haifa, who’s municipal area is 58 square kilometres.

Population
At the end of the year 2001 Jerusalem’s population stood at 670.000 individuals. Of this number, 454,600 (or 68%) were Jewish and 215,400 (or 32%) were Arabs. This compares to 81% Jews and 19% Arabs in Israel as a whole (without the West Bank and Gaza).
Population Growth
In 2001 the growth rate of the Arab population was faster than that of the city’s Jewish population: 3.2% growth in the Arab sector compared to 1.3% growth in the Jewish sector.
It appears that the Jewish population in Israel in general and in Jerusalem in particular is fighting a losing battle with the Arabs, which is clearly due to the large number of abortions in the Jewish population. This is the only category in which the Jews are ahead of the Arabs. The shortfall cannot be remedied by increased Aliya but by having larger families.
